PAULA 01 - Shelf

Concept

The target group are young people, living a nomadic lifestyle and still value high-quality but simple furniture. The honesty of construction and material is fundamental. No tools and hardly any prior knowledge are needed to assemble the piece of furniture independently. It should be able to be tied into a bundle and be easy to carry.

Material

We used multiplex as material, which we covered with white HPL. So it is very resistant and robust for a long time, perfect for frequent moving. It is also easy to mill. It does not warp long term, and is easy to be cleaned. So it’s the optimal material for a frequent deconstruct and rebuild cycle, by not wearing out the connections.

When assembling, the strap completes the surface of the side panels and thus enhances the appeal of the assembly. The strap also offers the pos- sibility to customize the shelf by using a different color or even pattern. So for the manufacturing company it has a high possibility to launch different versions while keeping the costs low.

Bundle

The shelf can be packed into a bundle for transport. Due to the exclusi- ve use of plug-in connections, there are no components that can scratch the décor; moreover, these pegs secure the shelves from slipping out si- deways. The package is comparatively easy to transport and if damage occurs, individual parts can be easily replaced.

Carry

The strap that is left over when folding can be attached to the feet by means of the loop and thus be converted into a carrying strap. Due to the width of 5 cm, the weight of the shelf is well distributed on the shoulder. Since there are no individual parts, nothing gets lost during a move and no tools are needed for the subsequent assembly.

This project was developed with Max Haubold during my second year at Bauhaus University, Weimar.
