Foot Orthosis

Research

When the peroneus nerve becomes dysfunctional or isn’t working fully anymore, for example after a stroke, the foot can’t be lifted anymore. This makes it extremely hard to walk a there will be gib compensatory move- ments. So walking gets exhausting and uncomfortable, that will have an impact not only on the health but also on the social life.

Production

Mass produced orthosis are uncomfortable, just available in a few sizes and not modified in various proportions or the different weight of the cus- tomer. So handmade bespoke orthosis are tackling that but they are really expensive, so most of people can’t afford it. The solution could be an auto- mated digital customization.

Automation

In order to achieve the perfect fit, the foot will be scanned. This could everyone do, by just taking about 30 pictures of the foot. Those pictures could be fully automated processed by the company to a digital model, which would then be refined. After this step the orthosis could be applied on the model and individual in the personal needs.

Trendsetter

The target group are especially people 50 and above. But in my opinion they are influenced a lot by the younger generations, such aus their children or grandchildren. So I picked much younger personas than the actual would be to underline the different styles and demands, as a result of their different lifestyles, like trendsetters.

Appearance

Those three different personas have really disparate views on they lives, leading to a variety of personal styles and needs. I picked three pictures for each spectrum, that are blending into the other areas. I think the most successful orthosis would incorporate all of them. So in the process after splitting up the directions I brought them back together.

This project was developed in cooperation with Martin Jäger during my fourth year in exchange semester at Politecnico di Milano.
